What Is Medicare? A Brief History and Overview

Medicare is a federal health insurance program created in 1965 under President Lyndon B. Johnson as part of the Social Security Act. It was designed to provide affordable healthcare coverage for Americans age 65 and older, many of whom previously had limited or no access to health insurance.

Over time, Medicare has expanded to also cover certain younger individuals with disabilities and those with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS.

Today, Medicare plays a vital role in protecting the health and financial well-being of millions of Americans.

How Medicare Works

Medicare is divided into different parts, each covering specific services:

Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facilities, hospice care, and some home health services.

Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical equipment.

Part C (Medicare Advantage): An alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies that bundle Parts A and B, often including additional benefits.

Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): Helps cover the cost of prescription medications.

Why Medicare Matters

Medicare provides essential healthcare coverage that helps seniors and eligible individuals manage medical costs, access necessary care, and maintain a higher quality of life. With various plan options available, beneficiaries can choose coverage that best fits their healthcare needs and budget.

I would like Medicare Part A info and Part B titles moved to that heading. The idea is that those seeking info on Medicare itself can find it easily.

I would like a call to action at the end of A and B added in to say

Out-of-pocket costs under Medicare Parts A and B can be substantial. To help protect your financial well-being, it is important to consider additional coverage—either a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan paired with a Prescription Drug Plan (Part D), or a Medicare Advantage plan, which may include prescription drug coverage.
